# Is the US stock market a "big casino"?

The average daily notional trading volume of S&P 500 index options has now reached USD 3.5 trillion, setting a new historical high (blue line), and has officially surpassed the total market capitalization of the Russell 2000 small-cap index (red line).

According to previous mentions by Wall Street Watch, retail investors currently contribute more than half of the average daily trading volume of U.S. stock options, exceeding that of institutions.
