The firm downgraded Tesla's rating to an equivalent of "hold," marking the first downgrade of the company since June 2023. Tesla's stock price is approximately 210 times its expected earnings over the next 12 months, making it the second most expensive company in the S&P 500 index, only behind Warner Bros. Discovery at 220 times, and far above third-place Palantir Technologies Inc. at 186 times. "While everyone understands that Tesla is not just an automaker, we expect the trading environment to be more volatile over the next year," analyst Andrew Percoco wrote in a report to clients on Sunday. "We believe there is downside potential in the current expectations, and the catalysts for its non-automotive business seem to be reflected in the current stock price." This is his first report as an analyst covering Tesla for Morgan Stanley. Percoco set a new target price for Tesla stock at $425, which implies a 6.6% drop from Friday's closing price. He succeeded Adam Jonas, Morgan Stanley's long-time analyst covering Tesla. According to compiled data, Jonas had given Tesla a "buy" rating since September 2023.
