But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. For example, the **Myers Industries, Inc.** (NYSE:MYE) share price is up 65% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 14% (not including dividends). That's a solid performance by our standards! Unfortunately the longer term returns are not so good, with the stock falling 13% in the last three years. Since the stock has added US$53m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns. AI is about to change healthcare. To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price. Myers Industries was able to grow EPS by 79% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly higher than the 65% increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market isn't as excited about Myers Industries as it was before. This could be an opportunity. NYSE:MYE Earnings Per Share Growth December 12th 2025 It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between _total shareholder return_ (TSR) and _share price return_. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Myers Industries the TSR over the last 1 year was 71%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the _total_ shareholder return. ## A Different Perspective It's nice to see that Myers Industries shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 71% over the last year. That's including the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 4% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Myers Industries better, we need to consider many other factors.
