# Waymo suspends autonomous driving services due to a major power outage in San Francisco

PingWest reported on December 22 that on Saturday evening local time, approximately one-third of San Francisco residents experienced prolonged power outages due to a fire at a Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) substation.

During this time, several Waymo self-driving taxis were stalled at intersections, causing traffic congestion. The company subsequently announced the suspension of its autonomous ride-hailing service in the San Francisco Bay Area. Waymo spokesperson Suzanne Philion stated, "Due to the widespread power outage, we have temporarily suspended services and are closely collaborating with municipal departments to restore operations as soon as possible."

As of early Sunday morning, some areas still had not fully restored power. This incident is one of several recent operational anomalies for Waymo, which previously involved controversies such as vehicles illegally overtaking, hitting a cat, and hiding people in the trunk.
