# Korean Won Weakens on Cautious Policy Signal

The South Korean won depreciated to around 1,451 on Friday, retreating from the previous session’s gains as renewed caution from the central bank weighed on sentiment.

In its 2026 policy framework, the Bank of Korea said any further easing would depend on inflation, growth, and financial stability, signaling a shift from last year’s dovish approach and indicating that the 2.5% policy rate could remain in place for an extended period.

Persistent currency weakness remains a key concern, driving up import costs and inflation, with forecasts for next year’s inflation rising to around 2.0%.

To manage exchange-rate risks, the BOK plans to strengthen FX market operations and attract foreign investors by expanding 24-hour trading, relaxing offshore won rules, extending financial network hours from April, and piloting an offshore won settlement system by year-end.
