# UnitedHealth is suspected of "insurance fraud": A U.S. Senate report criticizes it for "manipulating diagnoses" to obtain federal funding

According to the Zhitong Finance APP, a committee in the U.S. Senate has found that UnitedHealth (UNH.US) has adopted "aggressive strategies" to collect diagnostic information that can increase payments for its Medicare Advantage members. The report states that UnitedHealth "has turned risk adjustment into a business, which was not its original intention." This report is based on a review of 50,000 pages of records submitted by UnitedHealth to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee last year.

Iowa Republican Senator and Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley requested access to these documents in a letter in February, mentioning an investigation for 2024. The investigation found that UnitedHealth systematically added diagnostic information to patient records, resulting in billions of dollars in additional federal funding. Some of these diagnoses were questioned or deemed inaccurate, and many patients appeared not to have received treatment for these newly added conditions.

UnitedHealth is facing multiple investigations into its business practices, including civil and criminal investigations disclosed by the Department of Justice in July.

A spokesperson for UnitedHealth told the media that the company disagrees with the characterization in the Senate report and added that UnitedHealth complies with Medicare requirements and performs well in diagnostic audits. He stated, "We will continue to be committed to providing lower-cost, more convenient, and higher-quality healthcare services to the populations we serve, including those participating in Medicare Advantage."
