# Microsoft's "Plan B": Dissatisfied with OpenAI's performance, Copilot fully introduces Anthropic to usher in the dual-engine era

According to informed sources, Microsoft (MSFT.US) has become one of the top customers of Anthropic and is expected to invest about $500 million annually to leverage Anthropic's artificial intelligence (AI) to power Microsoft products.

Microsoft is also intensifying efforts to promote Anthropic's AI models to its cloud computing customers, which could bring more revenue to both companies.

Informed sources indicated that Microsoft is incentivizing Azure sales personnel to promote Anthropic's models and has increased spending on Anthropic AI models for its internal use and products. These initiatives come at a time when OpenAI, supported by Microsoft, is conducting more business with Microsoft's competitors.

According to two Microsoft employees, Microsoft recently informed some sales personnel in its Azure cloud division that selling Anthropic AI models to Microsoft cloud customers would count towards their sales quotas just like Microsoft’s own software. Microsoft typically does not provide such sales incentives for non-Microsoft products, as these products have lower profitability for Azure. The sales incentives for Anthropic are set to last until the end of June.

The company previously offered similar incentives for selling OpenAI models (which Microsoft also sells through Azure). The new quota system effectively means that the motivation for sales personnel to promote Anthropic models is as strong as that for promoting OpenAI models.

These moves indicate that Microsoft, similar to other established tech companies, is closely collaborating with several AI developers, representing significant revenue opportunities while posing potential threats to some of its core businesses.

Microsoft is also racing to use OpenAI and Anthropic's technologies to create its own AI automation products for enterprise customers, thereby avoiding the risk of ceding such business to AI newcomers.

In November 2025, Microsoft committed to investing up to $5 billion in Anthropic—who has previously received support from Amazon (AMZN.US) and Alphabet's Google (GOOGL.US). Anthropic has also stated that it has committed to investing $30 billion in computing capacity on Microsoft Azure and signed contracts to purchase up to 1 gigawatt (GW) of additional computing capacity.

Microsoft has invested over $13 billion in OpenAI, holding nearly 27% of the shares of the ChatGPT maker.

Anthropic primarily generates revenue by directly selling AI to enterprises, but some sales personnel from Microsoft and Anthropic are collaborating to promote the purchase of Anthropic models through Azure to enterprises. Anthropic is also partnering with Amazon and Google to jointly sell its models to large clients As of last July, Microsoft was spending over $40 million per month on Anthropic models, with an annualized rate of about $500 million. These models power the coding assistant features in GitHub Copilot, such as the ability to monitor website outages and automatically fix them.

Since then, Microsoft has increased its procurement of Anthropic models to drive the capabilities of other products like 365 Copilot and Security Copilot, including complex tasks such as generating PowerPoint presentations based on brief text prompts. Reports also noted that Anthropic previously predicted its annualized revenue would be between $7.5 billion and $9 billion by the end of 2025.

Compared to the public retail prices of the startup, Anthropic offered discounts when Microsoft used the models for internal purposes, such as developing prototypes, data analysis, and other research.

After Microsoft executives expressed disappointment with the underperformance of certain OpenAI-driven features, Microsoft first moved to incorporate Anthropic models into 365 Copilot. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has also recently pushed product teams to use Anthropic models to accelerate development.

Recently, engineers from Anthropic have provided support to Microsoft engineers developing Copilot features powered by Anthropic models
