The 250MW/500MWh can supply power to the grid for up to 2 hours. CleanCo Queensland, an energy company, has officially switched on Tesla Megapacks at its Swanbank B site. The project, named Swanbank Battery, was initiated to provide energy more quickly and at a lower cost. Formerly a coal-fired power station, the site reopened after its 2012 decommissioning. The installation cost about 214 million USD (330 million AUD), which was provided by the Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund. The energy provider plans to expand its clean power portfolio to include wind, solar, and hydrogen production. Tom Metcalfe, CleanCo’s CEO, said of the project, “The Swanbank Battery is a critical addition to CleanCo’s portfolio, providing greater flexibility to supply reliable, lower-emissions energy to our customers when it’s needed most. This project reflects the continued evolution of the Swanbank site, from coal to gas-fired stations and now battery storage, reinforcing CleanCo’s role in supporting Queensland’s energy system with dependable, lower-emission firming generation.” Tesla’s Megapack battery footprint is rapidly expanding across the globe. Earlier this year, Copia Power used over 594 Megapacks at an Arizona plant. Another major project was commissioned in Ontario around the same time.
