# Google and Meta reach billion-dollar AI chip agreement, intensifying competition with NVIDIA

According to a person involved in the negotiations, Meta Platforms has signed an agreement to lease Google's AI chips (Tensor Processing Units, TPUs) for the development of new AI models. Another informed source stated that this multi-year agreement is worth billions of dollars. Meta is also in talks with Google to procure TPUs for its data centers as early as next year, although the progress of these negotiations remains unclear. This agreement is a victory for Google, adding a well-known client and helping to build its billion-dollar TPU sales business. Meanwhile, this poses a threat to NVIDIA, which dominates the AI chip market and currently provides Meta with graphics processing units (GPUs) for AI training. According to individuals involved in the arrangements, in addition to partnering with Meta, Google has also signed an agreement with a large unnamed investment institution to establish a joint venture funded by the latter to lease TPUs to other clients. Google is in discussions with other investment institutions to promote the establishment of more such joint ventures
