The company has been developing its second-generation training chips under the MTIA project, which includes a design named Olympus, originally expected to be ready by the fourth quarter of 2026. However, concerns over technical complexity, manufacturing risks, and software stability have forced it to reconsider. Meta had previously abandoned an earlier design called Iris, and as the internal team struggles to build a product that can truly compete with NVIDIA's ecosystem, Olympus now seems to face a similar fate. This reality is forcing Meta to rely more on external partners. The company recently signed a multi-billion dollar agreement with Alphabet's Google to lease its AI chips and is collaborating with Advanced Micro Devices to deploy up to 6 megawatts of Instinct chips in its data centers.
