# Federal Reserve official Kashkari stated that the situation in Iran adds uncertainty, and it is too early to assess the impact on inflation

Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari had previously expected a rate cut this year, but he stated that the attacks on Iran have made him less certain.

"Given the current geopolitical events, we need to gather more data," Kashkari said on Tuesday at the Bloomberg Investment Conference in New York.

He also mentioned that the key issue regarding inflation at the moment is how long the rising energy prices will last. Oil prices surged significantly on Monday and Tuesday after the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran and hinted that the conflict could last for weeks.

"It is too early to assess the impact on inflation and its duration," Kashkari said.

After the Federal Reserve's January meeting, where interest rates were kept unchanged, the market expects policymakers to remain on hold at this month's meeting. This week, market participants also lowered their expectations for two rate cuts within the year.

Kashkari reiterated his support for Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. Although Powell's term as chairman will end in May, he has the option to remain as a governor until January 2028.

"I think Powell has done an excellent job both as a governor and as chairman, and I would be happy if he chooses to continue," Kashkari said
