# Why Is Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) Down Today, 3/9/2026?

The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO), which tracks the S&P 500 Index (SPX), was down by 1.08% in Monday's pre-market trading due to rising oil prices amid escalating U.S.-Iran tensions. At the time of writing, benchmark Brent crude futures were up 14.1% to $105.72 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude futures were 13.69% higher at $103.46 a barrel.

The sharp move in oil came after key producers in the Middle East cut output while the Strait of Hormuz remained closed.

The latest moves come after a volatile week on Wall Street. The Dow fell about 3%, marking its worst weekly drop since Trump's tariff announcement shook markets in April 2025. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 lost roughly 2%, and the Nasdaq Composite ended the week down 1.2%.

Overall, VOO has lost 1.28% over the past five days but has gained 20% over the past year.
