She and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also mentioned this in an internal meeting. Additionally, recent reports suggest that SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) intends to adjust its game release strategy by stopping exclusive IPs from landing on PC, effectively reverting to a completely closed approach. This has led to a renewed classic rivalry between XBOX and PlayStation, framed as "open vs. closed." Since the appointment of the new XBOX CEO, this is the first time Satya has discussed the future development direction of XBOX with her internally. The main focus is on confirming that Microsoft will continue to invest in the gaming business, stating that Microsoft will maintain its presence in the market as a platform provider, developer, productivity company, and game company, affirming that gaming will be one of Microsoft's important growth engines. However, Asha and Satya also acknowledged that XBOX is facing some challenges and transformations, such as the continuous decline in XBOX hardware market share, weakening marketing and brand influence, and first-party games starting to land on PlayStation, which forces XBOX to rethink its console, platform, and ecosystem strategies and directions. ### Can XBOX Become a Bigger Platform? It is certain that XBOX should gradually move towards an open approach, integrating XBOX and PC. Therefore, the rumored Project Helix, set to launch next year, will support both XBOX and PC games, not only directly facing the challenge of Steam Machine but also being more open due to its x86 architecture, especially compared to the closed path of PlayStation. It is not surprising that XBOX has such a strategy; last year, its push for the XBOX Full Screen Experience on handheld devices hinted at this: Microsoft intends to decouple hardware and software by establishing a platform, allowing players to have a consistent interface and experience whether they are using handheld devices or PCs through XBOX Game Pass. If in the future XBOX itself can play PC games, then XBOX can become a larger platform and potentially attract PC players to join. If it moves towards openness, the blurred boundaries between XBOX and PC will inevitably be raised again. The new Project Helix may also lead PC players to be seen merely as a gaming PC launched by Microsoft, while XBOX players may view it as a soulless new home console. However, I believe that the direction of decoupling platform and hardware is correct, which is also why Steam Machine is so appealing; In addition to the long-term cooperative relationship between Microsoft and OEMs, the hardware innovation of XBOX can even be handled by OEMs, such as the ROG XBOX Ally jointly launched with ASUS last year. In summary, regardless of whether the strategy of opening up XBOX is good or bad, at least the future development of XBOX has a clear direction. It remains to be seen how Project Helix will enable both original XBOX players and new PC players to have the same experience in front of their living room TVs or monitors.
