Elon Musk indicated that Tesla and SpaceX will jointly construct a "Terafab" trillion-dollar factory in Austin to design and manufacture semiconductors for both companies, although he did not disclose the timeline for the project. During a live event in Austin on Saturday, Musk mentioned that the factory will be adjacent to Tesla's existing headquarters in Austin and will ultimately produce two major series of chips: one tailored for Tesla's autonomous taxi Cybercab, Optimus humanoid robot, and other projects, while the other will cater to the aerospace sector. Currently, Tesla vehicles are equipped with AI4 chips produced by Samsung, and xAI, which has now merged with SpaceX, is a major customer of NVIDIA. Musk had previously stated that Tesla is considering building its own chip factory, as the production capacity of existing suppliers like TSMC is insufficient to support Tesla's future plans. Despite Tesla's electric vehicle business experiencing a decline in sales for two consecutive years, Musk has repeatedly asserted that the demand for new projects like Cybercab, Optimus robots, and the space data center will see significant growth. During Saturday's presentation, a slide indicated that Tesla plans to produce 1 billion Optimus robots. Musk also displayed a rendering of a satellite named "AI Sat Mini," claiming it is part of SpaceX's ultimate plan to create a giant orbital data center. He stated that the satellite could provide 100 kilowatts of power using solar energy.
