# The UK's largest broadband network operator Openreach announced an expansion of its collaboration with Google AI

Openreach, a network operator under British Telecom (BT), announced on Wednesday that it has expanded its collaboration with Google Cloud to accelerate fiber broadband construction using artificial intelligence and reduce emissions from one of the largest commercial vehicle fleets in the UK.

Openreach, which operates the UK's largest broadband network, stated that this collaboration utilizes data tools from Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, to analyze the routes, idling, and failure patterns of its fleet of 24,000 vans, which travel nearly 200 million miles (322 million kilometers) each year.

James Tappenden, Managing Director of Openreach, said, "By applying Google Cloud technology to real operational challenges, we have seen tangible and measurable benefits."

The company stated that the system has already reduced unnecessary travel, lowered fuel consumption, and supported a faster transition to electric vehicles—an initiative that could reduce carbon equivalent emissions by approximately 10,000 tons annually.

The company also mentioned that they are using Google's artificial intelligence models to map 35 million households in the UK and national transport corridors, enabling planners to more quickly identify locations for laying full fiber lines.

Openreach is investing £15 billion (approximately $20.1 billion) with plans to extend its fiber network to 25 million premises by the end of 2026
