Wedbush: SpaceX may pave the way for a merger next year by leveraging the Terafab chip factory According to Wedbush, the giant Terafab chip manufacturing plant that Tesla (TSLA.US) and SpaceX plan to build in Austin, Texas, may mark the first step towards a merger between the two companies as early as next year. Over the weekend, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced a new semiconductor joint venture called Terafab, which will be located in Austin, Texas. Terafab will consist of two advanced chip factories, jointly operated by Tesla and SpaceX. Musk's move aims to better control the semiconductor supply in fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and space computing. In an investor report released on Wednesday, Wedbush analysts noted: "The Terafab project, a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX, is expected to cost up to $25 billion and will be operational at Tesla's Gigafactory in Texas. Once completed, it will become the largest semiconductor wafer factory in human history. The project focuses on chip design, photolithography, manufacturing, memory production, advanced packaging, and testing. The initial production target is expected to be 100,000 wafers per month, which will later expand to 1 million wafers per month, approximately 70% of TSMC's global output, with a goal of producing 100 billion to 200 billion custom AI and memory chips annually to support Tesla's FSD, Cybercab, and Optimus production lines." Wedbush pointed out: "As TSMC and Samsung's chip output is insufficient to meet Musk's targets, the factory will gradually increase its capacity to meet the company's demand for computing power, which currently exceeds supply capabilities. The current AI computing output is about 20 GW per year, which accounts for only about 2% of these companies' demand." They added: "Although the specific timeline for the project is uncertain, it will accelerate the company's ambitious AI development strategy. We believe this will lay the foundation for Tesla to become an AI giant in the coming years, with chip and memory supply expected to be the biggest constraints.
