Meta stated that the data center being built in El Paso will create 300 new jobs and will require over 4,000 construction workers at peak construction. The company also mentioned its commitment to adding over 5,000 megawatts of clean power to the grid and will work with specialized non-profit organizations to bring fresh water to the region to alleviate the burden on water resources. In a blog post on Thursday, the company said, "Since breaking ground last year, we have been proud to call El Paso home and are committed to being good neighbors." When Meta began construction on the 1.2 million square foot site in October, its planned investment was $1.5 billion. Gary Demasi, Vice President of Data Center Development at Meta, revealed the increased investment plans at the annual Borderplex Alliance summit held in El Paso. Meta is ramping up spending on AI infrastructure as the company and its hyperscale competitors are trying to meet what they describe as unprecedented and soaring demand for computing resources. In its latest earnings report released in January, Meta stated that its capital expenditures for the year would reach $13.5 billion. However, unlike its tech competitors Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, Meta does not have a cloud infrastructure business, and its massive spending is under additional scrutiny from Wall Street. The stock has fallen 16% this year, dropping 7% on Thursday after the company faced two significant legal setbacks this week for failing to adequately regulate Facebook and Instagram. While Meta is investing resources in AI, it has been cutting costs elsewhere. On Wednesday, the company confirmed to CNBC that Facebook, Global Operations, Recruiting, Sales, and its virtual reality division will lay off hundreds of employees. Nevertheless, the expansion of its data centers continues. Meta has a total of 30 data centers, including the new ones under construction, with 26 located in the United States. The El Paso project is its third data center in Texas. The company is also heavily investing in chips and systems to fill the new data centers. In February, the company signed large-scale agreements with NVIDIA and Advanced Micro Devices, and this week it committed to being the first customer for Arm's new data center processors. Meta recently launched four new versions of its self-developed MTIA accelerator, which the company first disclosed to the public in 2023. As numerous AI data centers emerge across the country, these projects are increasingly facing opposition from nearby residents, primarily due to concerns over water supply and rising electricity costs. National media in the New York area reported that after Meta spent $750 million to build a data center in a county in Georgia in 2018, local faucets had once run dry Meta announced on Thursday that it is undertaking eight water resource restoration projects in Texas, including a collaboration with the water rights nonprofit DigDeep to "bring clean, running water for the first time to over 100 households." The new data center will utilize liquid cooling technology, employing a closed-loop system that uses recycled water.
