# HSBC expands wealth management push

HSBC Taiwan is expanding its push into Taiwan’s fast-growing wealth management market with a new premium financing product targeting high-net-worth clients, as global banks’ compete for the nation’s wealthy families.

The service would allow affluent customers in Taiwan to borrow funds to pay insurance premiums, helping them preserve liquidity while maintaining insurance protection, and supporting succession and estate planning needs, it said yesterday.

The launch reflects rising demand among Taiwan’s wealthy for more sophisticated wealth preservation, inheritance planning and cross-border financial services, as more families diversify their assets overseas, HSBC Taiwan international wealth and premier banking head Kevin Hu (胡醒賢) told a news conference in Taipei.

Taiwan’s high net worth segment is continuing to expand rapidly in client numbers and total assets, supported by strong equity market performance in recent years and Taiwan’s role in the global artificial intelligence supply chain, Hu said.

The number of people with net assets exceeding NT$100 million (US$3.18 million), as well as their assets under management, reached record highs at the end of March, he said.

Affluent Taiwanese clients are increasingly keeping core assets in Taiwan while allocating more investments abroad, reflecting growing demand for global diversification and integrated wealth planning services, he added.

Taiwan has been positioning itself as a regional asset management hub, encouraging international banks to expand their private banking and wealth management offerings in the local market.

HSBC remains competitive by leveraging its global network spanning more than 30 markets and 12 private banking networks to meet rising demand for integrated banking, investment and wealth planning services, Hu said.

The new product is designed to ease the burden of large upfront insurance premium payments while improving capital efficiency for wealthy clients, HSBC Taiwan wealth and premier solutions head Victor Lee (李勝凱) said.

Taiwanese entrepreneurs are showing more interest in insurance as part of broader wealth planning strategies, with about 15 percent indicating plans to increase life insurance holdings over the next year, he added.

For affluent families, insurance products are increasingly seen not only as protection tools, but also as vehicles for inheritance planning and intergenerational wealth transfer, HSBC Taiwan retail products head Mike Huang (黃至弘) said.

Wealthy Taiwanese spend about 50 times more on annual insurance premiums than their average peers, with typical premiums for mass market customers averaging about NT$11,000 a year, Huang said.

The initiative reflects HSBC Taiwan’s strategy to improve its appeal in wealth management and deepen relationships with affluent clients, he added.
