This new coalition aims to ensure the rapid and effective implementation of the EU Emissions Trading System for road transport and buildings (ETS2), set to introduce carbon pricing for diesel, petrol, and heating fuels in 2028. In a joint letter, the signatories reaffirm their support for ETS2, warning against further delays or weakening of the mechanism. They emphasize that predictability is vital for European prosperity, enabling businesses to scale green alternatives and invest in low-carbon solutions. The letter also highlights that ETS2’s success depends on complementary policies, such as the Renewable Energy Directive (REDIII) and the Clean Corporate Vehicle Regulation, to achieve the EU’s climate goals. Federico Terreni, climate manager at T&E, said “Delaying or weakening the ETS2 would be a big mistake. What businesses and citizens need is consistency, not flip-flopping on measures that are crucial for the EU to meet its climate targets.” Raphaël Héliot, senior policy manager at E-Mobility Europe, added “ETS2 is the catalyst Europe needs to unlock zero-emission transport at scale. Without its swift and stable implementation, we risk stalling the decarbonisation of road transport, undermining energy security, and ceding our competitive edge. The time for debate is over: lawmakers, industry and civil society must now come together to implement the ETS2. We urge policymakers to deliver on ETS2 and the Social Climate Fund, ensuring the certainty and support that will drive investment, innovation, and a fair transition for all.” The letter coincides with the launch of the European ETS2 Action Alliance, a new platform to protect the ETS2 and ensure its effective implementation.
