# Entering the Japanese market! OpenAI establishes an office in Tokyo and will launch a Japanese language GPT custom model

According to media reports, OpenAI opened its first Asian office in Tokyo on Monday, marking its official entry into the Japanese market.

OpenAI stated that they have developed a customized model optimized for Japanese and appointed former Amazon Japan CEO Tadao Nagasaki to oversee the Japanese business.

Since the launch of the chatbot ChatGPT at the end of 2022, this startup company has caused a stir in the global market with its generative AI technology. Currently, OpenAI is working hard to explore new sources of revenue.

Media previously reported that Altman and Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap met with hundreds of Fortune 500 executives in the US and UK this month, striving for business cooperation.

Last year, after meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Altman stated that he was considering establishing an office in Japan. OpenAI has already opened offices in London and Dublin.

Lightcap mentioned in a previous interview:

"We have a lot of unmet demand, and over time, the Japanese market will bring substantial revenue to OpenAI."

Japan hopes to leverage the power of artificial intelligence to accelerate digital service transformation and alleviate the increasingly severe labor shortage issue.

Although Japan is considered a laggard in artificial intelligence technology, local companies including SoftBank and NTT are heavily investing in large language models. OpenAI's clients in Japan include Toyota, Daikin Industries, and local governments.

Furthermore, Microsoft announced last week that it will invest $29 billion in the next two years for cloud computing and AI infrastructure development in Japan
