The pan-European STOXX 600 index fell by 3.86 points or 0.7%, closing at 549.96 points. The UK FTSE 100 index dropped by 54 points or 0.6%, closing at 8,732 points; the French CAC index fell by 51 points or 0.7%, closing at 7,859 points; the German DAX index decreased by 164 points or 0.7%, closing at 23,957 points; the Spanish IBEX 35 index fell by 100 points or 0.7%, closing at 14,206 points; and the Italian FTSE MIB index dropped by 294 points or 0.7%, closing at 40,256 points. UK chemical company Johnson Matthey surged by 28% after agreeing to sell its business to U.S. Honeywell for a total consideration of $2.4 billion, including debt.
