# The import restrictions in Indonesia have caused Shell and BP PLC-Spons gas stations in the country to run out of fuel

Due to supply constraints caused by import restrictions, Shell Plc and BP Plc-branded gas stations in Indonesia are experiencing a fuel inventory crisis.

Shell stated on its official website that some gas stations selling three grades of gasoline in Indonesia have temporarily suspended supply, with the recovery time yet to be determined. The statement also noted that Shell holds a small market share in Indonesia and is currently coordinating with the Indonesian Ministry of Energy to ensure fuel supply.

According to Kpler data, gasoline imports in Indonesia are controlled by government quotas, and as of the end of August, gasoline imports had decreased by 22% year-on-year. Although domestic oil fields can produce some crude oil, the country remains a net importer of oil; at the same time, due to insufficient refining capacity, some petroleum products need to be imported from abroad.

According to a report by Kompas citing interviews, Indonesian Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia stated that private enterprises have applied to increase import quotas. He also encouraged these companies to procure fuel from PT Pertamina, which dominates the gasoline retail market in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, media statistics of bidding documents show that in the past two weeks, PT Pertamina has significantly increased both the quantity and frequency of gasoline procurement from overseas to meet demand for the remainder of the year.

According to a report by the Jakarta Post citing an executive from PT Aneka Petroindo Raya, the operator of BP-branded gas stations in Indonesia, BP-branded gas stations are also facing shortages of certain products. A company document shows that there are about 50 gas stations in Indonesia using the British company's brand.

Earlier this year, Shell Group agreed to sell its gas stations and related fuel distribution business in Indonesia to a joint venture formed by Citadel Pacific Ltd. and Sefas Group
