# Elon Musk proposed using AI satellites to "shade" and cool down

Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk proposed a new climate "cooling plan" on X this week: deploying a group of AI-controlled satellites to make slight adjustments to the amount of solar radiation received by Earth in order to curb global warming. This concept is similar to the "space umbrella" plan that has been discussed in academia for many years, but has primarily remained in the theoretical stage until now.

Musk suggested that these "large solar AI satellites" could regulate the energy absorbed by Earth through reflection; furthermore, he claimed that with the help of lunar factories, the annual power generation could reach hundreds of terawatts. However, the scientific community has long criticized this idea, with research indicating that to produce a significant climate effect on a considerable scale, thousands of satellites may be needed, costing hundreds of billions or even trillions of dollars.

Ironically, SpaceX was recently halted by the U.S. Air Force from launching rockets due to environmental issues, while Musk is proposing a space plan to "save the climate."

Musk is also promoting a space computing center along with the high-throughput Starlink V3 satellite cluster, which can achieve a throughput of up to 1 terabit per second. This next-generation satellite is expected to become the core infrastructure for solar-powered orbital computing clusters. Critics question the feasibility of such space-based Earth engineering projects, which could cost trillions and be difficult to implement, suggesting that "proven technologies" such as emission reduction, energy efficiency improvement, and carbon capture are more viable options
