# Norway: Suspends the ethical guidelines of its sovereign wealth fund to avoid selling off $230 billion in tech stocks

On November 12, Norwegian Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg stated that the government has suspended the ethical guidelines that constrain the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund after concerns arose that the fund might sell off its holdings in technology companies worth $230 billion following its sale of shares in Caterpillar Inc. In August, the fund's ethical advisor requested the sale of its shares in Caterpillar due to the company's bulldozers being used in the Gaza war.

Stoltenberg mentioned in an interview in Oslo on Monday that this move could serve as a "template." The relevant regulations could have informed the fund that it needed to sell shares in its most profitable companies. Stoltenberg's remarks further reveal the disruptive impact of the Ukraine and Gaza wars, as well as the Trump administration's attacks on climate and diversity policies, on the concept of ethical investing.
