Integrating hundreds of thousands of GPUs to enable interconnection of multiple data centers According to Zhitong Finance APP, Microsoft (MSFT.US) has launched its latest data center in Atlanta, which is referred to by Microsoft as the "AI Super Factory" because it is directly connected to other data centers and can provide the computing power of hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA (NVDA.US) GPUs to support AI workloads. The network will also support OpenAI, in which Microsoft has invested. According to Microsoft, the next-generation AI data center located in Atlanta began operations in October and is the second facility in the "Fairwater" series, connected via a dedicated network to the first Fairwater site in Wisconsin. The system integrates hundreds of thousands of the latest NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, creating the world's first truly interstate AI computing cluster. The concept of Microsoft's "AI Super Factory" is centered on merging multiple geographically dispersed data centers into a single virtual supercomputer, which is fundamentally different from the design philosophy of traditional data centers. Alistair Speirs, General Manager of Microsoft Azure Infrastructure, explained, "Traditional data centers are designed to run millions of independent applications for multiple customers, while we call this an 'AI Super Factory' because it runs a complex job on millions of hardware." In this model, it is no longer a single site training an AI model, but rather a network of sites jointly supporting the same training task. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated, "Fairwater embodies our vision for interchangeable infrastructure clusters: the ability to run any workload with the highest performance and efficiency anywhere, based on dedicated accelerators and network paths."
