# India expects to finalize an agreement with the United States next month to lower reciprocal tariffs

A senior official in India stated in New Delhi that India is optimistic about reaching a preliminary agreement with the United States by next month to reduce reciprocal tariffs, with expectations that both sides will soon resolve the tariff dispute.

"We are very optimistic and hopeful that we can find some kind of solution within this year," said Indian Commerce Minister Rajesh Agrawal at an industry event on Friday. "The top priority is to reach a framework trade agreement that can address the issue of reciprocal tariffs."

Both sides are negotiating an agreement to be implemented in phases, with the first phase focusing on the issue of reciprocal tariffs. Trump imposed a 50% tariff on India in August, partly as a punishment for its purchase of Russian oil.

Agrawal stated, "We are very close and have tried to clarify most of the issues." He added regarding the framework agreement, "Both countries need to find a suitable implementation plan before announcing the agreement."

He also mentioned that a broader bilateral trade agreement being pursued simultaneously "will take time" to finalize. New Delhi hopes that this agreement will completely eliminate reciprocal tariffs.

Agrawal stated on Friday that a U.S. trade delegation is expected to visit India again soon
