# Thinking of Buying Nvidia Stock? Weigh These 2026 Risks First

Nvidia (NVDA) remains one of the most important stocks in the U.S. market, supported by strong demand for AI data-center chips and its leadership in advanced computing. Even as talk of an AI bubble has grown louder, NVDA shares are still up more than 40% year-to-date. The company also posted record quarterly revenue of about $57 billion in its most recent results, driven by a sharp rise in data-center sales, highlighting its central role in AI infrastructure.

But as the year draws to a close and investors look ahead to 2026, several risks could challenge Nvidia's near-term prospects.

## **1.** **Export Limits Continue to Weigh on Nvidia's China Business**

Nvidia's H200 chip is one of the company's most advanced products and is used in high-end AI computing. Demand for the chip is strong, but sales to China face close review.

U.S. officials have recently approved limited shipments of H200 chips to China. At the same time, some lawmakers have raised concerns that the technology could be used for military-related AI applications. Those concerns increase the risk of tighter rules or delays in future approvals.

Looking ahead, wider export licenses could support demand if they are fully rolled out. For now, however, the policy outlook remains unclear. Because of that uncertainty, China continues to be a key risk for Nvidia heading into 2026.

## **2.** **Rising Competition Tests Nvidia's Market Lead**

At the same time, Nvidia is facing rising competition across the AI chip market. While the company remains the clear leader in high-end GPUs, rivals are working to close the gap.

Chipmakers such as Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Intel (INTC) are investing heavily in their own AI processors. At the same time, major cloud providers are working on custom chips to cut their reliance on Nvidia. For example, Alphabet (GOOGL) continues to develop its in-house Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs, which are designed to handle AI workloads inside Google's data centers. If more cloud customers move workloads to in-house silicon over time, Nvidia could see slower growth, even as overall AI demand remains strong.

Meanwhile, Nvidia has also adjusted its own strategy. The company recently pulled back plans to compete directly in cloud services through its DGX Cloud platform. Instead of going head-to-head with cloud leaders like Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet (GOOGL), and Microsoft (MSFT), Nvidia is refocusing DGX Cloud on supporting internal AI development and partners.

The decision lowers execution risk but also highlights how crowded the AI infrastructure market has become. As more companies invest in chips and platforms, Nvidia's ability to protect market share and pricing will be closely watched heading into 2026.

## **3\. High Valuation Raises the Stakes for 2026**

Nvidia's stock trades at elevated levels compared with its history, leaving little room for disappointment. NVDA currently trades at a price-to-earnings multiple of roughly 46x, well above the semiconductor sector median near the mid-20s and higher than peers such as Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft, which trade closer to the low-30s range.

With so much optimism already priced in, even a modest slowdown in revenue growth, margin expansion, or guidance could trigger a sharp reaction in the stock.

## **Is NVDA a Good Stock to Buy?**

Despite the above-mentioned risks, many Wall Street analysts remain positive on Nvidia's long-term outlook. Most continue to rate the stock a Buy and have kept high price targets, citing strong data-center demand and Nvidia's central role in AI infrastructure.

Overall, Wall Street has a Strong Buy consensus rating on Nvidia stock based on 39 Buys, one Hold, and one Sell recommendation. The average NVDA stock price target of $263.58 indicates about 40% upside potential.
