# Caught in the "caffeine" controversy, Chagee strikes back

A user on Zhihu stated that "Chagee and other high-caffeine beverages are actually skirting the edge of being quasi-drugs," which sparked heated discussions among netizens. Chagee (CHA.US) officially responded last Friday (26th) afternoon, stating that it has noticed recent rumors and false information circulating online about the company. Regarding such malicious fabrications that damage the company's reputation, the legal department has fully intervened and initiated legal proceedings to firmly protect its rights according to the law.

Chagee emphasized that it always values the goodwill supervision and suggestions based on facts from all sectors of society, and will also take legal measures against any defamation and slander that crosses legal boundaries to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.

Chagee further responded that each tea beverage is made from original tea leaves and natural floral and fruit materials. Natural tea leaves inherently contain tea polyphenols and caffeine, and the caffeine content of each drink can be checked through the "Health Calculator" on the mini-program, allowing users to view it before purchasing. Chagee's stock fell 2.5% last Friday, closing at $11.9.

In response to the nature of caffeine, the official WeChat account of the Shanghai Narcotics Control Committee, "Shanghai Narcotics Control," published a science article last Saturday (27th).

The article pointed out that caffeine is a natural alkaloid that is inherently present in tea leaves. The tea plant "produces" caffeine to fend off pests and help them survive in the wild. All true teas, including black tea, green tea, oolong tea, and white tea, contain caffeine, with only a few pure herbal teas like rose tea and chrysanthemum tea lacking it. The caffeine content in dried tea leaves is actually higher, about 2% to 5%, which is more than the 1% to 2% found in coffee beans. However, less caffeine is extracted when brewing tea, so a cup of tea usually contains less caffeine than coffee.

"Shanghai Narcotics Control" particularly emphasized the essential difference between caffeine and drugs in its article, stating that if caffeine is extracted and produced, transported, or sold for purposes other than consumption, it becomes a full-fledged drug. It also pointed out that "talking about toxicity without considering dosage is 'playing tricks'." Currently, caffeine beverages on the market have strict additive standards.
