# Meta is being sued by the U.S. Virgin Islands for allowing fraudulent advertisements

The Attorney General of the U.S. Virgin Islands filed a lawsuit against Meta on Tuesday, accusing the owner of Facebook and Instagram of deliberately profiting from fraudulent ads and failing to protect children on its social media platforms.

The complaint states: "Meta intentionally exposes its users to fraud and harm. It does this to maximize user engagement, thereby increasing revenue." The lawsuit has been submitted to the Superior Court of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The lawsuit cites a media report from last month, which revealed that Meta internally estimates that 10% of its revenue in 2024 (approximately $16 billion) will come from ads related to fraud, illegal gambling, and prohibited products. According to cached internal documents, Meta will not block advertisers suspected of fraud unless its algorithms are 95% confident that the marketers are engaging in misconduct.

Following the publication of the report, two U.S. senators called for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate the matter and "take strong enforcement action when appropriate."

The lawsuit from the U.S. Virgin Islands seeks penalties for Meta's violations of its consumer laws. Attorney General Gordon E. E. Reyna stated in a press release that this "marks the first time the Attorney General has responded to reports of rampant fraud and scams on the Meta platform."

The lawsuit also accuses Meta of misleading the public about its efforts to protect children and adults on its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.

The complaint states: "Meta has repeatedly promoted the 'safety' of its platform to users, parents, regulators, and Congress. Meta has consistently failed to enforce the policies it has set."

In response to the lawsuit, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone referenced the company's past statements, asserting that the allegations of failing to protect consumers are baseless.

He said: "We actively combat fraud and scams because people on our platform don’t want this content, legitimate advertisers don’t want this content, and we don’t want this content." He added that fraud reports from users on the Meta platform have decreased by half over the past 18 months.

Stone stated that claims regarding Meta's failure to provide a safe platform for young users are also unfounded. He said: "We strongly oppose these allegations and believe the evidence will show our long-standing commitment to supporting young people."

In August, reports indicated that an internal Meta document outlined its chatbot behavior policy, which allowed the company's AI products to "engage in romantic or sexual conversations with children." Meta's response to the report was that it removed guidelines allowing chatbots to flirt with and engage in romantic role-playing with minors
