# Italian Stocks Start 2026 Strong

The FTSE MIB rose 1% to close at 45,374 on the first trading day of 2026, reaching its highest level in over two decades and extending last year’s strong rally.

Financials posted gains, with MPS up 2.4%, Intesa Sanpaolo 0.6%, and UniCredit 0.2%.

Chip-related stocks advanced sharply, with Prysmian up 4% and STMicroelectronics 4.2%, tracking renewed global optimism around semiconductors and AI. Leonardo climbed 4.2% amid continued uncertainty over Russia-Ukraine peace talks.

Other notable gainers included Enel and Eni (both +1.4%) and Stellantis (+2.7%).

On the macro front, PMI data showed Italy’s manufacturing sector contracted at a faster pace, marking the steepest decline since March.
