HIGHLIGHTS In Reference: The USDA acknowledged the possibility that China may soon buy up substantially more U.S. soybean exports. "China is reported to be considering buying more U.S. soybeans," the agency said in its latest WASDE report. This reference was one source of support for soybeans in afternoon trade, even though no changes were made to the U.S. soybean balance sheet. Analysts are debating if China will buck its typical seasonal activity in response to President Trump's Truth Social post, buying mostly South American soybeans in the winter months ahead of the next U.S. planting season. Prevailing Attitude: Corn futures finished flat after the WASDE showed an increase of 100 million bushels in the USDA's outlook for U.S. corn exports. The uptick corresponds with a 100 million bushel decrease in ending stocks, to 2.13 billion bushels. But traders seem intent on riding soybean futures up and keeping corn activity limited, said Charlie Sernatinger of Marex in a note following the report's release. Staying the Course: WASDE didn't give wheat much support in afternoon trading. The USDA lifted its ending stocks projection for wheat by 5 million bushels, to 931 million bushels. The higher stock figure comes along with a 5 million bushel reduction in feed usage for wheat. "Nothing in this report would suggest the bearish fundamental narrative is changing, and a continuation of the recent choppy trading action is likely to continue until new market moving news comes to the forefront," said the Hightower Report in a note. INSIGHT Emerging Issues: Soybeans harvested in the northern portion of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso are exhibiting quality issues, said Michael Cordonnier of Soybean and Corn Advisor in a note. The culprit for the low-quality beans is too much rain, which is why crops there are battling mold issues. In some cases, farmers are harvesting their fields early in an effort to yield a crop before it is destroyed by mold, said Cordonnier. This could eventually affect soybean yields in Brazil, although record soybean production is still expected there this year. Breaking the Bank: Bankruptcy filings by U.S. farms jumped by nearly 50% in 2025, said the American Farm Bureau Federation. In a research note, the AFBF said that 315 farms filed for chapter 12 bankruptcy in 2025, which is up 46% from the prior year. Farmers in the Midwest and Southeastern regions of the country led in filings, together comprising over 70% of the total. "Deep crop losses across commodities common in these two regions have compounded after years of declining receipts and rising expenses," said Samantha Ayoub of the AFBF in the note. Data from the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City also shows that farmers are taking out larger operating loans, and taking longer to pay them as well. Running Short on Storage: U.S. corn and soybean production appears to be growing faster than new grain elevators and other storage facilities are being built to hold them. In a research note, Joe Janzen, an associate professor with the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics at the University of Illinois, said that storage growth hasn't kept up with the rate that farmers have managed to increase their production since 2019. While a record amount of corn was harvested in the U.S. last fall, growth of additional storage capacity was seen as "negligible" at only 337 million bushels across the past six years, said Janzen--with only 5% of nationwide storage left over after the record harvest.
