# Canada announces a new defense industrial strategy, focusing on domestic manufacturing to regain combat readiness

Canadian Prime Minister Carney announced Canada's new defense industrial strategy at a press conference on February 17 local time. This strategy sets a series of important goals for Canada over the next decade, including **awarding 70% of federal defense contracts to Canadian companies, essentially achieving the goal of domestic procurement and maintenance of most military equipment**.

In addition, this CAD 6.6 billion strategic plan also proposes to increase the availability of Canadian military equipment to 75% for naval vessels, 80% for army vehicles, and 85% for air force aircraft.

This new defense industrial strategy also lists a set of ten industrial sectors in which it hopes to gain dominance, including: ammunition production, digital and cloud service development, sensors, space-based platforms for surveillance, training, and simulation, as well as special vehicle manufacturing.
