# The pan-European Stoxx 600 index closed up more than 1%, spending USD 7.2 billion to settle with Bayer, which fell 7%

In January, the UK inflation rate fell to 3%, and European stock markets rose on Wednesday. The pan-European Stoxx 600 closed up 1.2%.

German life sciences company Bayer announced on Tuesday that its subsidiary Monsanto plans to pay $7.25 billion to settle lawsuits related to the carcinogenicity of its herbicide Roundup, and the company's stock price fell 7% on Wednesday.

The UK FTSE 100 index closed up 130 points or 1.2% at 10,686 points on Wednesday. The German DAX index closed up 279 points or 1.1% at 25,278 points. The French CAC 40 index closed up 67 points or 0.8% at 8,429 points
