These campuses will be located in Caddo Parish and Bossier Parish in northwest Louisiana. Amazon stated that it expects to create 540 full-time jobs at the data centers and indirectly support about 1,700 related jobs, including electricians, HVAC technicians, and security experts. Earlier this month, Amazon announced that it expects its capital expenditures to reach $200 billion this year, surpassing any other hyperscale cloud service provider; total capital expenditures for all leading companies are expected to approach $700 billion by 2026. Wall Street has expressed skepticism about Amazon's capital expenditure plans, as its stock price fell for nine consecutive days following the release of its earnings report on February 5, resulting in a market value loss of over $450 billion. Most of Amazon's spending is expected to be directed towards AI-related projects, including data centers, chips, and networking equipment. Tech companies are competing to expand their data center footprints to meet the demand from various businesses running AI models. Amazon, Microsoft, and Google have all invested hundreds of billions of dollars in building large data centers. Meta has also chosen Louisiana to build its large Hyperion data center, a joint venture project with Blue Owl Capital valued at $27 billion. The accelerated construction of AI data centers by tech companies has also sparked some opposition in local communities. Local residents believe that data centers may consume large amounts of electricity and water resources, negatively impacting their quality of life. Last year, Microsoft abandoned a planned project in rural Wisconsin after residents raised environmental and financial concerns. Amazon stated that it has partnered with the local utility company, Southwestern Electric Power Company, to "ensure that we bear all costs associated with the data center campus," including expenses for new and upgraded energy infrastructure. The company will also use natural air cooling methods for the data centers when conditions allow, to reduce electricity consumption. Amazon claims that the data center facilities in Louisiana will only use surplus water resources from the surrounding area, so it "will not put pressure on local water supply." The company also plans to invest up to $400 million in public water infrastructure to support campus operations.
