# Geopolitical conflicts affect tech giants: Amazon's data center in the UAE was attacked and caught fire, putting pressure on the global cloud service supply chain

The Zhitong Finance APP noted that Amazon's (AMZN.US) cloud service (AWS) data center in the United Arab Emirates was hit by an unidentified object, causing a fire and service interruption.

While it is still unclear whether this incident is related to the US-Iran conflict, on the day of the fire, Iran had just launched missiles at the UAE in retaliation for the attacks that resulted in the deaths of Supreme Leader Khamenei and other senior officials.

According to an announcement on the AWS health status dashboard, the incident occurred around 4:30 PM Dubai time on Sunday, and the fire department cut off the facility's power and generator electricity during the firefighting process.

The company's statement indicated, "One of our availability zones... was affected by a fire caused by sparks from an object hitting the data center." Here, "availability zone" refers to a cluster of regional data centers.

Iran's retaliatory actions have spread across the Middle East, with US bases and allies in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia suffering multiple rounds of missile and drone attacks.

AWS stated that it is currently unable to estimate the power restoration time for the affected data center and emphasized that other data center clusters were not affected and that traffic in the area has been rerouted to other data centers. The company operates 123 such data center clusters in 39 regions worldwide
