# Democrat mocks Mullin for remarks on 'smell' and 'taste' of war: 'Call of Duty doesn't count'

Rep. Pat Ryan (D-N.Y.) went after Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) over comments he made about the U.S. operation against Iran, asking the senator “what the actual f—” he was “talking about.”

During a Monday appearance on Fox News’s “America Reports,” Mullin said, “The loss of life, when the president first came out and he talked to the American people, he was very resolved and direct on what we could expect.”

“War is ugly, smells bad, and if anybody’s ever been there, and been able to smell the war that’s happened around you and taste it and feel it in your nostrils and hear it, it’s something that you’ll never forget and it’s ugly,” he added. “And fortunately, you have, President Hegseth — or I say, ‘President Hegseth’ — Secretary \[of Defense Pete\] Hegseth that is — got a great relationship with President Trump. And \[Secretary\] Hegseth’s been there, he’s done that.”

Ryan, an Army veteran who served in Iraq, gave a fiery response to Mullin’s comments on the social platform X.

“Hey @SenMullin, what the actual f— are you talking about? Did I miss the part of your bio where you served in combat (or served in uniform at all??). Call of Duty doesn’t count,” Ryan said in a post on X Monday evening.

The Hill reached out to Mullin’s office for comment.

The debate in Congress on war powers was shook up by Trump’s decision to attack Iran last weekend. In both the House and the Senate, Democrats have quickly moved to force votes on a resolution that would limit the president’s use of military force against Iran.

“I served two combat tours in Iraq. I’ve seen what happens when a lying, chicken-hawk President beats the war drums. I ran for Congress and serve on the Armed Services Committee because I refuse to let the country I love repeat those mistakes,” Ryan said in a post on X Saturday.

“It’s why we passed the War Powers Act (after Vietnam) in the first place. So that before the President sends our troops into harm’s way, he has to make his case TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE,” he added.
