This initiative is led by AMD, Broadcom, and Microsoft, who have formed the OCI MSA (Optical Compute Interconnect Multi-Source Agreement), with NVIDIA also being one of the founding members. Major cloud providers such as Meta and OpenAI are also participating in the promotion. According to a report by Tom’s Hardware, the goal of OCI is to establish a common optical interconnect specification that allows different processors and interconnect protocols to operate on the same fiber optic infrastructure, compatible with switches and system equipment from various suppliers. Through this architecture, cloud providers are expected to replace traditional copper interconnects with fiber optics, connecting more AI accelerators under high-speed transmission and predictable power consumption, while enhancing the flexibility and scalability of data center architectures. The architecture also supports different interconnect protocols, such as UALink promoted by AMD and Broadcom, as well as NVLink from NVIDIA. By establishing a common optical layer, OCI aims to enable interoperability among various processors on the same optical infrastructure while maintaining competition among different protocols. In terms of technical specifications, OCI will define a common physical layer (PHY) based on NRZ signal transmission and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) for short-distance optical interconnects within AI racks and scale-up clusters. The initial specification will adopt a configuration of 4 wavelengths × 50Gb/s, with a unidirectional transmission rate of 200Gb/s, and can be further expanded to 800Gb/s per fiber. As the ecosystem continues to develop, future technical blueprints are expected to increase the number of wavelengths and signal rates, aiming to enhance transmission capacity to 3.2Tb/s or even higher per fiber. Additionally, OCI technology will support various forms of optical integration, including pluggable optics, on-board optics, and co-packaged optics (CPO) directly integrated with computing chips. Brian Amick, Senior Vice President of Technology and Engineering at AMD, stated that as large AI systems become more prevalent in the future, optical scale-up interconnects will become an important infrastructure for data centers. By establishing open specifications, OCI MSA aims to promote the formation of a multi-vendor ecosystem, simplify system integration processes, reduce development risks, and shorten the deployment cycle of the next generation of AI hardware. Near Margalit, Vice President of the Optical Systems Division at Broadcom, pointed out that OCI MSA can be integrated with existing ASIC architectures based on electrical SerDes, while also providing a development path for directly integrating optical interfaces into chips in the future. Through standardized designs, the system development process can be simplified, and the implementation of new technologies can be accelerated As the demand for AI computing continues to rise, finding a balance between performance and open architecture has become an important issue for industry development.
