The app will be taken off the Quest store at the end of March, and any remaining access through VR hardware will end entirely by the June deadline. The platform will continue to exist in a stripped-down form as a mobile app for phones, where Meta has said it intends to compete in a space closer to Roblox than to the immersive virtual world Zuckerberg once promised. But the VR version, which was the original vision and the centerpiece of Meta’s 2021 pivot, will be gone. Starting March 31, events and individual virtual spaces will be removed from the Quest store. Perks that had been tied to Meta Horizon Plus subscriptions, including Meta Credits, digital clothing, avatars, and in-world purchases, will also be discontinued at that point. The full hardware cutoff follows on June 15. ### A pivot that cost billions and delivered little When Meta changed its name from Facebook in October 2021, CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the metaverse as the next frontier of computing and predicted it would reach a billion users within a decade. The company poured resources into Reality Labs, the unit responsible for building that vision, and launched Horizon Worlds at the end of that year. The platform never delivered on those expectations. It never drew more than a few hundred thousand monthly active users, a fraction of what would be needed to justify the investment. Reality Labs posted operating losses of billions of dollars every quarter. In the fourth quarter of 2025 alone, the unit reported a loss of $6.02 billion. The January 2026 round of cuts at Reality Labs eliminated more than 1,000 employees, including the staff of Ouro Interactive, an in-house studio that had been building first-party content for Horizon Worlds since 2023. Those cuts preceded the broader announcement that Horizon Worlds would be deprioritized in VR in favor of a mobile strategy, which Tuesday’s news now confirms as a full shutdown of the VR experience. ### A pattern of pullback across VR The Horizon Worlds closure is part of a wider retreat from VR that has accelerated throughout the past year. Meta shut down its fitness app Supernatural, closed several game studios it had acquired to build out its VR content library, and recently pulled back on Hyperscape Capture, a space-scanning app released in beta that will no longer allow users to share scans with others in headsets. Each of these decisions points toward the same conclusion: Meta is no longer committed to building VR as a social or entertainment ecosystem in the way it described in 2021. The company has shifted its public emphasis and internal investment toward artificial intelligence, where it sees clearer commercial opportunity and more immediate user adoption. Whether the Quest hardware line survives this strategic shift is an open question. Reports suggest a Meta Quest 4 headset is in development for next year, but the rate and scale of cutbacks across VR-related projects has raised doubts about what that device would be used for if the content and social infrastructure around it continues to shrink. ### What users lose on June 15 For the relatively small but dedicated community that had built a presence in Horizon Worlds, the shutdown represents a concrete loss. Community-made experiences, including support groups and social spaces that had developed real regularity among their participants, will not be preserved or migrated to the mobile platform. Meta’s framing of the change as a separation of two platforms designed to let each grow with greater focus does not address what happens to the community infrastructure that existed only in VR. For those users, June 15 is simply an end date. The mobile version of Horizon Worlds will continue, but it functions as a different product aimed at a different audience than the one that adopted VR headsets specifically to access the kind of experience Meta once promised they would find there. ### 相關股票 - [Direxion Daily Meta Bull 2x Shares (METU.US)](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/quote/METU.US.md) - [Meta Platforms (META.US)](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/quote/META.US.md) - [Roundhill META WeeklyPay ETF (METW.US)](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/quote/METW.US.md) - [Direxion Daily META Bear 1X Shares (METD.US)](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/quote/METD.US.md) - [GraniteShares 2x Long META Daily ETF (FBL.US)](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/quote/FBL.US.md) ## 相關資訊與研究 - [Tech Wrap March 30: OPPO Find X9 Ultra, WhatsApp on CarPlay, Blaupunkt](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/news/281041030.md) - [Meta Superintelligence Labs is quietly building a hardware team](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/news/281657591.md) - [Meta integrated ai into the core of its risk review program - website](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/news/281190495.md) - [China Vows to Support Cross-Border Deals Following Meta's Manus Buyout](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/news/281606199.md) - [Draft IT regulations may widen govt oversight on social media content](https://longbridge.com/zh-HK/news/281133616.md)
