# Report: Iran plans to impose a "security passage fee" on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, Brent crude oil retreats

On Thursday, according to semi-official Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA), **the Iranian parliament is brewing a bill that requires ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz to pay Iran a "security passage fee."**

This could be Iran's attempt to "monetize" its control over this critical waterway, which accounts for about one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports. Since the U.S. and Israel initiated a war against Iran, Iran has disrupted the passage of vessels it believes are associated with hostile parties and their allies.

The Iranian Students' News Agency reported that **the bill will require countries using the strait for transportation, energy transit, and food supply to pay Iran a toll or fee.** The lawmaker did not specify the current stage of the bill or disclose the specific fee amount.

Following the news, Brent crude oil fell slightly.
