# Tesla quietly plans large-scale solar expansion

Tesla seems to be quietly advancing its ambitions in the solar energy sector, exploring a deal worth approximately $2.9 billion to procure production equipment from Chinese suppliers.

The negotiations involve several companies, including Maxwell, JinkoSolar, and Laplace. Maxwell currently appears to be the frontrunner, with its stock price jumping about 12% following the news, while other related companies' stock prices also rose over 7%. Reports indicate that the equipment needs to be delivered before autumn, suggesting that Tesla's timeline is relatively urgent.

This aligns with Musk's broader vision. He has proposed building 100 gigawatts of solar capacity in the U.S. by 2028 to power Tesla's operations and support the growing electricity demand, particularly from data centers.
