description: "As the US-Iran conflict enters its fourth week, disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have triggered a fuel crisis in Australia. With hundreds of gas stations running dry and reserves dwindling – Victoria reporting over 109 stations with at least one fuel out of stock, New South Wales 37 stations completely out, and Queensland facing shortages of diesel and regular unleaded petrol – the nation, heavily reliant on imported refined fuels, is facing an unprecedented energy shock. Six oil tanker shipments originally scheduled for next month have been canceled or delayed, exacerbating fears about future supply. Current petrol reserves are only sufficient for 38 days, and diesel and jet fuel reserves for just 30 days, far below the international standard of 90 days. # Strategic Reserves Insufficient, Hundreds of Australian Gas Stations "Out of Fuel"

Australia is grappling with a severe fuel supply crisis. With the US-Iran war entering its fourth week and shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz disrupted, the nation, which is highly dependent on imported refined petroleum products, is facing an unprecedented energy shock. Hundreds of gas stations have successively run out of fuel, and reserves are critically low.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen disclosed to the Federal Parliament this Monday that **over 109 gas stations in Victoria are out of stock of at least one type of fuel, 47 stations in Queensland have run out of diesel, 32 are without regular unleaded petrol for vehicles, and 37 stations in New South Wales are completely out of supply.**

Concurrently, Bowen revealed that six refined fuel transport ships originally scheduled to arrive next month from Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea have been canceled or postponed, prompting the federal government to urgently seek alternative sources.

Fuel reserve data is equally alarming. Bowen stated that current petrol inventory is sufficient for only about 38 days, while remaining reserves of diesel and aviation fuel are even lower, at just 30 days. Farmer groups nationwide have already sounded the alarm, reporting that diesel and fertilizer stocks are being depleted precisely during the critical period for agricultural production.

## Supply Shortages Spread, Multiple States in Crisis

The geographical spread of the crisis is widening. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns warned earlier that **105 gas stations in his state have completely run out of diesel.** According to The Guardian, Energy Minister Bowen has not yet disclosed the supply situation in Western Australia, the Northern Territory, South Australia, and Tasmania, implying that the actual number of affected gas stations could be far greater than the publicly released figures.

The cancellation or postponement of six oil tanker shipments has directly intensified market concerns about subsequent supply. In an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Bowen stated, "The flow of oil to refineries in Asia has slowed, and this is having a downward effect on us." He also attempted to calm market sentiment, suggesting that supply disruptions are more likely to manifest as "phased fluctuations" rather than sudden, comprehensive stoppages on any given day, and that the government would collaborate with refiners and importers to minimize the impact.

## Insufficient Reserves, Deep-Seated Energy Policy Issues Exposed

The root cause of this crisis lies in Australia's long-standing energy security vulnerabilities. **According to international practice, Australia should maintain 90 days of strategic fuel reserves. However, at the onset of the crisis, actual reserves were only about 30 days, far below the safety standard.**

Analysts point out that Australia's high dependence on imported refined fuels, coupled with an aggressive commitment to the green energy transition, leaves it with virtually no buffer when critical global energy chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz are disrupted.

Compounding the problem, a major domestic fertilizer plant has been shut down for two months due to damage, further intensifying the global fertilizer supply crunch. The ripple effects on agricultural production are already beginning to manifest.
