Private carrier Bamboo Airways expects to retain peak-hour flights but reduce frequencies on some sectors if fuel prices continue to rise, a spokesperson said, adding fare hikes are on the cards.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam said global fuel prices have been rising recently amid the Middle East conflict.
In Asia, jet A-1 fuel prices now cost US$204.94 per barrel, a 136% surge compared to last year’s average, according to the International Air Transport Association.
The aviation authority conducted a survey of nearly 40 international and domestic airlines March 20 and found more than 60% were in various stages of introducing fuel surcharges or adjusting ticket prices.
The fare increases ranged typically between 5% and 20% while some airlines added fuel surcharges of VND130,000-10 million. For cargo transport, some imposed fuel surcharges of VND17,000–VND40,000 per kilogram.
Facing cost pressures, Vietnamese carriers have asked the government to reduce environmental protection and aviation fuel taxes, scrap import duty on fuel bought from outside Southeast Asia and defer tax payments, provide interest rate support, restructure loans, and adjust aviation service fees at airports.
