The French central bank governor pointed out that the war in Iran could trigger negative supply shocks, leading to slower economic growth and faster rising consumer prices. He added that the latest news regarding this conflict "has not brought favorable signals." In an interview published on Monday, he stated, "The ECB cannot control oil prices, but we have the ability and the obligation to anchor inflation expectations for households and businesses at the mid-term target of 2%," and "if necessary, we are ready to take action in this direction." Some of Villeroy's colleagues had previously hinted that the ECB might take action as early as April. The market also generally believes that tightening policies are imminent, with current pricing reflecting expectations of up to three rate hikes this year. Villeroy reiterated that the ECB's interest rate path is not predetermined but will be data-driven. April will be the last routine policy meeting he attends before stepping down as the governor of the French central bank. "Discussions about preset dates seem very immature," he said, "There has been some overinterpretation in the financial markets in recent days." On another note, Villeroy stated that after strengthening bank regulation, the likelihood of instability risks in the European financial sector is lower than in 2007. However, he warned that the risks faced by the United States are greater and called for close attention to the dynamics of stock indices, private credit, and cryptocurrencies.
