SINGAPORE - Those working in social services could get higher salaries, with recommended pay guidelines for jobs in the sector up by 5 per cent on average. Some roles have larger increments of up to 15 per cent, in the latest pay benchmarks released by the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) on April 1. In a statement, the MSF said it has been updating pay guidelines annually so that salaries in the social service sector, which has over 22,000 staff now, remains competitive. For example, the latest recommended pay for care staff is $3,440 and senior care staff is $4,470, a 13 per cent and 15 per cent increase respectively from previous guidelines. This refers to salaries at reference point for staff who are competent at their jobs, but their wages are not at the maximum point yet. For managers or senior managers, the reference point recommendation is $7,740, a 3 per cent rise from previous guidelines. The guidelines take effect on April 1. The MSF encourages SSAs to adjust their pay packages within the year so that their staff are paid according to the guidelines. While the salaries guidelines are not mandatory for social service agencies to follow, about 80 per cent of employees in the sector are paid according to the guidelines, according to a parliamentary reply in February. In the reply, Minister for Social and Family Development Masagos Zulkifli said that over the years, the MSF has reviewed and raised the pay guidelines so that wages in the social service sector remain competitive against comparable roles in competing markets. The ministry has also adjusted funding for programmes to enable SSAs that it funds to pay their staff according to the latest guidelines. Since its 2023 financial year, the MSF has set aside over $170 million to support SSAs running MSF-funded services to implement salary adjustments. Source: The Straits Times © SPH Media Limited.
