Stronger exports helped Germany's economy grow faster than first reported in the second quarter of this year, overcoming some of the pain of higher energy prices from the Iran war, though growth is set to slow in the months ahead.
Gross domestic product in the eurozone's largest economy increased 0.3% on quarter in the three months through June, faster than the 0.2% first reported at the end of last month, Germany's statistics agency said Tuesday.
There was a noticeable upward revision to exports, traditionally a key part of Germany's economic engine, Destatis said. Goods exports rose 2.6% on quarter, likely helped by foreign-based firms stockpiling German goods to get ahead of expected price rises and supply issues due to the Iran war. Turnover in wholesale and retail trade also performed better than expected, the statistics agency said.
While the economy has proved resilient so far this year to the surge in energy costs and heightened uncertainty caused by the conflict in the Middle East, GDP is expected to grow only slightly at best in the third quarter, the Bundesbank said last week.
Record low water levels in the Rhine hitting logistics of German industry, as well as the unwinding of export growth in the year so far, are expected to slow economic expansion in the months ahead, it noted.
