In January this year, the global electric vehicle (including pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles) market maintained strong growth momentum, with a year-on-year increase of 63% to 1,067,248 vehicles. The Chinese market was the main contributor to sales, accounting for over 60% of the total global electric vehicle sales.
Moreover, boosted by the surging sales in emerging markets such as Thailand (up 239% YoY), Turkey (up 219% YoY), and Brazil (up 263% YoY), the global electric vehicle market share reached 16%, with pure electric vehicles accounting for a 10% share of the overall automotive market.
With the intensifying price wars in the Chinese market and the increasing availability of new, cheaper electric vehicle models in other mainstream markets, the global electric vehicle market is expected to continue to grow steadily. By the end of this year, the market share of electric vehicles may exceed 20% (with pure electric vehicles accounting for 15%).
January Global Top 20 Electric Vehicle Rankings: Aito M7 Enters Top Five, BYD's Dominance Fades
In the first month of 2024, Tesla's Model Y took the lead in the competition, with Model 3 also making a strong start and re-entering the top three. BYD (including BEV and PHEV) remained in second place, but with the internal competition heating up, such as the rising sales of the Song L and the upcoming launch of the Sea Lion 07, it remains uncertain if the Song will follow the success of the Qin Plus. The Qin Plus was once BYD's best-selling model but has now been replaced by the Song.
The most eye-catching in the top five is the Aito M7, a model backed by Huawei, which ranked fourth globally in January! It is worth mentioning that the sales of this model in the month, nearly 30,000 units, increased by a significant 9,000 units compared to December last year. Considering that this car is currently only sold in the Chinese market, this achievement is remarkable, giving Tesla's Model 3 another strong competitor.
Ranging from fifth to eighth place is the consistent BYD fleet, with not much novelty, but more highlights in the latter part of the list. Firstly, two models from Geely, the Galaxy L7 entered 17th place with nearly ten thousand units sold, and the smaller Panda Mini ranked 14th with monthly sales exceeding ten thousand. With the rise in sales of the Galaxy L6 (reaching a record 6,389 units in January) and the support of the Lynk &amp; Co 08 (8,816 units sold) and ZEEKR 007 (approximately 6,000 units sold), Geely seems to be ready to make a full force in the electrification race.
Another impressive model is the Deep Blue S7, a high-end model under Changan, which successfully entered the Top 20 list in January and is expected to continue to be a regular in the coming months.
However, with the rise of more Chinese electric vehicle models, BYD's dominant position on the list is starting to fade. For example, at its peak last year, BYD had a total of 10 models in the Top 20 list, but now only six remain, indicating a more diversified selection of electric vehicle models in the market.
Outside the top 20, it is worth mentioning the new BYDL, which delivered 7,374 units in its third month on the market and is expected to enter the top 20 soon. Another emerging model is the GAC Trumpchi E9 PHEV, a very uniquely styled large MPV, which set a sales record of 6,686 units in January this year and is expected to directly compete with the current electric MPV king, the TANK D9.
Global Top 20 Electric Vehicle Brands in January: Geely Makes Top Three Push
Looking at the brand rankings, in January this year, BYD became the world's best-selling electric vehicle brand with a registration volume of 195,000 vehicles, leading second-placed Tesla by over 80,000 vehicles. Among the top three, the most eye-catching is undoubtedly Geely, which jumped to third place with a registration volume of over 40,000 vehicles, mainly due to the expansion of its Galaxy product lineup (L6 and L7, as well as the launch of the E8 flagship model) and the continued success of the Panda Mini.
Another rising star under Geely's umbrella, Lynk &amp; Co, is benefiting mainly from the increased sales of the Lynk &amp; Co 08 SUV. Additionally, ZEEKR is only 200 vehicles behind Hyundai, ranked 20th, and is expected to enter the list soon. Geely, Lynk &amp; Co, ZEEKR, along with Volvo, may help Geely become the first automaker to challenge BYD and Tesla.
Apart from Geely, another surprise comes from Aito. Thanks to strong sales of the Aito M7, the brand has risen to 7th place, not only surpassing Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz but also trailing Ideal, ranked 6th, by only 164 vehicles.
Among traditional foreign car brands, Korean brands have had a slow start, with Hyundai being overtaken by Toyota and Jeep, currently ranking 20th. The Jeep brand continues to benefit from the strong performance of the Wrangler PHEV (with sales of 6,003 vehicles in January). Given the generous incentives for plug-in hybrid vehicles in the United States, Jeep is expected to ride the wave of the &#34;IRA Act&#34; and continue to significantly increase its sales.
From the perspective of automotive groups, BYD once again leads with a market share of 19.8%, while Tesla ranks second with a market share of 10.7%. It is worth noting that the market shares of these two brands have both decreased compared to the same period last year, with BYD dropping by 2.9 percentage points and Tesla even more significantly by 4.5 percentage points, indicating a more balanced global electric vehicle market.
Where there is a decline, there is also growth. The market share of Geely-Volvo has achieved a new breakthrough, rising from 5.8% a year ago to 9.7%, gradually approaching Tesla. Benefiting from strong sales of Wuling and IM Motors series models, as well as the performance of the MG brand in Europe, SAIC's market share has increased from 5.1% a year ago to 6.1%, surpassing Volkswagen Group (whose market share has dropped from 7.5% to 6.2%), a foreseeable achievement.
However, when looking at pure electric vehicles only, Tesla's market share still ranks first at 17.6%, but has decreased by 5.2 percentage points from 22.8% in the same period last year. BYD ranks second, with its pure electric market share rising from 16.1% to 17.1%. It is worth noting that there is only a 0.5 percentage point difference between the two, with BYD once again surpassing Tesla to become the world's best-selling pure electric vehicle manufacturer. Not far behind, is it?
