"Cloud giants" target the Asia-Pacific market, Amazon will launch new cloud facilities in Taiwan

According to Jitong Finance, Amazon (AMZN.US) announced on Wednesday that its cloud computing division Amazon Web Services (AWS) will launch an infrastructure region in Taiwan in early 2025 to meet the "high demand for cloud services" in the Asia-Pacific region. The company stated that the new region will initially include three availability zones, adding to AWS's existing 105 availability zones across 33 geographic regions globally. An availability zone is an isolated geographic location with one or more data centers, featuring independent power, cooling, and physical security. The statement mentioned that over the next 15 years, the cloud service provider will also invest billions of dollars in Taiwan. Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of AWS Infrastructure Services, stated in a release that the new AWS region in Taiwan will enable enterprises to utilize cloud services and "build with AWS's computing, storage, databases, analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence technologies." An AWS region is a physical location where a cluster of data centers is located. AWS mentioned that this will provide developers, startups, companies, non-profit organizations, and institutions involved in education, entertainment, and financial services with "more choices in running applications and providing services to end users from data centers located in Taiwan, ensuring that customers who wish to keep their content in Taiwan can do so." A month ago, AWS announced an additional investment of $9 billion in Singapore over the next five years to develop its cloud infrastructure and services in the country. In March last year, AWS stated that it would invest at least $6 billion in a new region facility in Malaysia by 2037. Previously, AWS announced a plan to launch a regional facility in Thailand in October 2022, with a 15-year investment of $5 billion. Additionally, AWS opened a new regional facility in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, in December 2021. Other tech giants such as Microsoft (MSFT.US) and Google (GOOGL.US) have also invested billions of dollars in the Asia-Pacific region. Google announced last month that it will invest $2 billion in Malaysia to establish its first data center and cloud computing region in the country. Microsoft stated that it will make investments related to artificial intelligence and cloud in several Southeast Asian countries including Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, while increasing its investment in the region. Data from Synergy Research Group shows that in the first quarter of this year, AWS led the cloud infrastructure services market with a 31% market share. Microsoft's cloud computing service platform Azure closely followed AWS in second place
