Tesla Cybertruck sales surge ~61% in July, outsells direct rivals: S&P Global Mobility

The Tesla Cybertruck is still being sold at a premium due to the continuation of its Foundation Series edition, but the vehicle is already dominating the electric pickup truck segment. As per data from S&P Global Mobility, Tesla saw a 1.2% increase in vehicle registrations in July 2024, thanks in part to the Cybertruck’s 5,175 registrations during the month. In June, Cox Automotive noted that the Cybertruck was the best-selling vehicle in the United States priced over $100,000. At the time, Cox noted that over 3,200 Cybertrucks were sold during the month. Considering the Cybertruck’s 5,175 registrations in July, it would appear that deliveries of the all-electric pickup truck saw a 61% month-over-month increase. Interestingly enough, S&P Global Mobility also estimated that other electric pickups in the market sold a total of 5,546 units combined in July 2024. This is a notable feat for the Cybertruck, considering that the electric pickup truck market today includes critically acclaimed vehicles like the Rivian R1T and the Ford F-150 Lightning. Other standouts in the month were the Honda Prologue, as noted in a CBT News report. S&P Global Mobility analyst Tom Libby, for his part, claimed that the current increase in EV sales is reliant on incentives. “At full MSRP, these EV products would not sell. They are being heavily incentivized to compete with internal combustion vehicles, and if these incentives were pulled, sales would drop dramatically,” Libby noted. While Libby’s point may be true for some EVs in the market, it is certainly not accurate for the Cybertruck. The all-electric pickup truck, if any, is in the opposite situation today. It is not just selling at MSRP—it is selling at a $20,000 premium due to the Foundation Series. Thus, it would appear that Cybertruck sales are increasing despite its raised price. Without the Foundation Series’ $20,000 premium, the Cybertruck AWD is expected to be priced at less than $80,000 and the tri-motor Cyberbeast is expected to be priced at less than $100,000. At such prices, the Cybertruck would be closer in price to its rivals like the Rivian R1T and the Ford F-150 Lightning.
