Google undergoes a major reorganization! Gemini joins the DeepMind team, while the head of search advertising business is promoted to Chief Technology Officer

Google reorganizes its artificial intelligence department, transferring the Gemini application team to DeepMind to enhance competitiveness in the AI field. On Thursday, October 17th, Google announced that the Gemini application team will be transferred to the artificial intelligence research lab DeepMind, under the leadership of Google AI head Demis Hassabis, while the team focusing on home assistant products will be moved to the platform and devices department. Google also announced that Prabhakar Raghavan, who has been in charge of the company's search, advertising, and commercial products since 2018, will be promoted to Chief Technology Officer and will work closely with Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The knowledge and information team led by Raghavan will be taken over by Nick Fox, a senior executive who has been with Google for twenty years. Pichai stated in a blog post: "The pace of AI development has surpassed any previous technology, and in order to accelerate progress, we have made efforts to simplify the structure. This transfer will bring these teams closer together, improve the feedback loop, and allow us to quickly deploy new models to the Gemini application." Last week, Google announced the upgrade of the Gemini 1.5 AI model, introducing Gemini-1.5-Pro-002 and Gemini-1.5-Flash-002, which reduced costs, significantly improved performance, and accelerated response times. The decision to transfer the Gemini application team to DeepMind comes as Google continues to restructure its teams to respond more quickly to the increasingly fierce competition in the field of artificial intelligence. Additionally, Google faces growing challenges, such as intensified competition in search and advertising businesses from platforms like TikTok and AI startups. Currently, Google is dealing with several antitrust lawsuits related to its search and advertising businesses. In July, Alphabet, Google's parent company, released its second-quarter report, showing lower-than-expected quarterly revenue and predicting further tightening profit margins. Alphabet's stock price has risen by 18% so far this year, while the S&P 500 index has increased by 22%.
