NVIDIA still cannot provide enough GPUs to meet demand, and it has requested SK Hynix to advance the schedule for HBM4 chips by six months.
On Monday, SK Hynix Chairman Choi Tae-won stated at the Group AI Summit held in Seoul that SK Hynix is working with NVIDIA to resolve supply bottleneck issues. He mentioned that NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang requested him to advance the timeline for SK Hynix's next-generation high-bandwidth memory chip HBM4 by six months during a recent meeting.
It is worth noting that Hynix revealed in October that it expects to supply HBM4 chips to customers in the second half of 2025. Choi Tae-won stated that the timeline for HBM4 is faster than the initial target but did not provide further details.
Jensen Huang's request to expedite delivery highlights the strong market demand expectations for NVIDIA's next-generation GPUs, which will include the new HBM chips. Currently, NVIDIA holds over 80% of the AI chip market share.
Additionally, SK Hynix also revealed the latest progress on its next-generation products on Monday, stating that it will launch 16-layer HBM3E chips in early 2025, while 12-layer HBM3E chips began mass production in September. It also plans to launch HBM5 chips between 2028 and 2030.
